5. Identity Verification and Biometric Information
To maintain a safe community of verified Muslim adults seeking marriage, the Service requires identity verification during onboarding.
5.1 What We Collect for Verification
- A photograph of your government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- A selfie photograph of you holding the ID or taken under our verification guidance
5.2 How We Use This Information
- We compare the selfie to the ID photo to confirm they show the same person
- We verify the date of birth on your ID confirms you are 18 or older
- Our trained moderation team manually reviews submissions to ensure authenticity
- After review, we retain the verification status (approved or rejected) on your account
5.3 Notice for Illinois Residents (BIPA)
The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) regulates the collection and use of biometric identifiers and biometric information.
Biometric identifiers we collect: A scan of your face geometry derived from the verification selfie, used solely to compare to your ID photo.
Purpose: Identity verification and age verification for account safety.
Retention schedule: Biometric identifiers are retained for as long as needed to maintain the integrity of your verification status, and in any event, no longer than three (3) years following your last interaction with the Service. Verification photos and biometric identifiers are deleted when you delete your account or after the retention period, whichever is sooner.
Disclosure: We do not sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from your biometric information. We do not disclose biometric information to third parties except: (a) with your express consent; (b) to complete a transaction you authorized; or (c) as required by law or court order.
Your consent: By submitting your ID and selfie for verification, you provide written consent under BIPA to the collection, storage, and use of your biometric information as described above. You may withdraw consent and delete this information at any time by deleting your account.
6. The Wali System
The Service incorporates the Islamic role of the wali (guardian) into the matchmaking process. The wali system functions differently for women and men users.
6.1 Women Users — Full-Authority Wali
If you are a woman user, you designate a wali during account setup. Your wali has full authority over your matchmaking activities, which means:
- Your wali receives notifications when you match or interact with prospective partners
- Your wali has read access to your chats with matched users
- Your wali may approve or decline match interactions on your behalf, depending on the configuration you set together
- Your wali receives the contact and profile information of matches, as is customary in Islamic matchmaking
6.2 Men Users — Advisory Wali (Optional)
If you are a man user, you may optionally designate an advisory wali. An advisory wali:
- Receives selected updates about your matchmaking activities
- May participate in chats at your invitation
- Does not have approval authority over your account actions
6.3 Wali Designation and Removal
You may change your wali through your settings. Removing your wali may limit certain features. If you are designated as someone's wali, you receive only the information necessary to fulfill that role and agree to use this information solely for that purpose.
7. Photos and Photo Visibility
7.1 Photo Processing
When you upload a photo to the Service:
- EXIF metadata (including location data, camera information, and timestamps) is automatically removed before storage to protect your privacy
- The photo is scanned for prohibited content including nudity, using automated detection
- Photos that may contain prohibited content are automatically blurred on our servers and may be reviewed by our moderation team
- Photos may be removed if they violate our Terms of Service
7.2 Photo Visibility
Photos you upload are visible to other users you match or interact with, subject to the visibility controls you set in your settings.
You retain ownership of photos you upload but grant us a limited license to display, store, and process them within the Service.
8. Chats and Group Communities
8.1 Direct Chats with Matches
Chat messages between matched users are persistent on our servers and may be reviewed in connection with moderation actions or legal requests. For women users, walis have read access to direct chats as part of the wali system described in Section 6.
8.2 Wali Community Group Chats and Mosque Partnerships
The Service offers community group chats, including groups partnered with specific mosques. When you join a community group:
- Your name, profile information, and messages are visible to other group members
- Group administrators (which may include mosque-partnered accounts) can moderate group activity
- Profile-sharing within groups requires your explicit consent for each share, as described in our Terms of Service
8.3 Subscription Tier Access
Access to certain group chats and features is determined by your subscription tier. We process tier information through RevenueCat to grant the appropriate access.
9. How We Share Information
We share your information only as follows:
9.1 With Other Users
- Profile information, photos, and messages you choose to share are visible to other users you match or interact with, subject to the visibility controls you set
- Your wali may receive information as described in Section 6
- Group chat participants see your shared information per Section 8
9.2 With Service Providers
We share information with third parties that help us operate the Service. These include:
- Supabase — database and authentication infrastructure
- Twilio — SMS delivery for verification and notifications
- RevenueCat — subscription management and tier validation
- Apple Inc. and Google LLC — app distribution and in-app purchases
- PostHog — usage analytics
- Sentry — error tracking and crash reporting
- Mosque partners — for community group administration only, where you have joined a mosque-partnered group
These providers may access your information only to perform tasks on our behalf and are obligated to protect it.
9.3 Legal and Safety
We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect rights, property, or safety, prevent fraud, or enforce our Terms.
9.4 Business Transfers
If Wali Marriage is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your information with advertisers or for marketing purposes by third parties.
10. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You may delete your account at any time through the app settings.
After account deletion, we may retain certain information for a limited period to:
- Comply with legal obligations
- Resolve disputes
- Enforce our agreements
- Maintain backups (typically deleted within 90 days)
Biometric identifiers are deleted upon account deletion or after the retention period described in Section 5.3, whichever is sooner.
Anonymized or aggregated data that cannot identify you may be retained indefinitely.

For help, reply HELP to any message or contact us at izharbid@walimarriage.com.
We use Twilio to deliver SMS messages. Twilio's privacy practices are described at https://www.twilio.com/legal/privacy.
13. Push Notifications
The Service sends push notifications to your device about matches, messages, account activity, and other Service-related events. Notifications may include deep links that open specific sections of the app. You can manage notification permissions through your device settings.
14. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, secure infrastructure providers, and routine security review. Identity verification photos and biometric identifiers are stored with additional access controls limited to authorized moderation personnel.
However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
If we become aware of a data breach affecting your information, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.
